Planning an outdoor kitchen and pizza oven that you'll actually use
The difference between a showpiece and a weekly habit comes down to layout, shade, and where the smoke goes.
The outdoor kitchens that get used every week share the same handful of decisions.
Start with prevailing wind. Put the grill and the oven downwind of the seating, or every dinner ends with guests moving chairs.
Second, work triangle. Grill, prep counter, and sink or cooler within a few steps. Long runs of beautiful stone counter look great in photos and make cooking annoying.
Third, shade and cover. In Houston, an uncovered outdoor kitchen gets used four months a year. A covered structure — even a simple pergola with a solid section over the cook zone — doubles that.
The pizza oven is the piece worth spending on. A properly built brick dome with real insulation holds 700°F for hours, cooks a pizza in ninety seconds, and then roasts and bakes on the falling heat all evening.
Build it as one project, in one set of materials. Kitchens assembled in phases almost never match.
