Masonry, direct vent, wood, gas or electric: choosing the right fireplace

Every fireplace conversation starts the same way: what kind should we get? The honest answer is that it depends less on taste than on your walls, your venting, and how often you'll actually light it.

A traditional masonry fireplace is the real thing — firebrick, a proper throat and smoke chamber, radiant heat that keeps warming the room after the fire is out. It's the most expensive and the most permanent, and it needs a footing that can carry the weight.

Direct vent gas seals combustion behind glass and vents straight through an exterior wall. No chimney required, no draft problems, and it lights with a switch. For most Houston retrofits, this is the practical choice.

Wood-burning prefab fireboxes give you real fire at a fraction of full masonry cost, with a metal chimney chase you can face in brick or stone so it reads as masonry from outside.

Electric costs the least and installs anywhere there's an outlet. No heat output worth counting, but for a bedroom or an apartment-scale space it does the visual job.

The surround matters as much as the unit. Brick, natural stone, cast stone, tile — that's the part people actually look at every day, and it's where a mason earns their keep.
