What Actually Affects the Cost of a Fireplace Installation
You will not find a price on this page. That is deliberate, and it is the most useful thing we can tell you.
Nobody can quote a masonry fireplace without seeing the chimney, the wall, the venting run and the gas line. Not us, not anyone. The variables that decide the labor and the material list are physical things inside your house, and they are invisible from a web form.
Any site publishing a flat price for a fireplace installation is publishing a number designed to get a phone call, and the customer finds that out at the estimate when the real figure arrives. We would rather explain the mechanics honestly, then come out, look at the actual conditions, and hand you a written itemized estimate you can hold someone to.
Here is what a Houston installer is really pricing when they look at your room.
What actually moves the price
Opening size and location
A wider or taller opening changes the header, the framing and, on a wood-burning build, the flue area required to make it draw. An opening on an exterior wall is a different job from one on an interior wall in the middle of the house, and one on a two-storey wall is different again.
Venting run and type
This is the single biggest swing on a gas installation. A short horizontal direct vent through an exterior wall is quick. A vertical run through a second floor, an attic and a roof means framing a chase, firestops, roof penetration, flashing and a cap — several times the work and material of the horizontal version. Elbows and total run length are also capped by the appliance, so a long route can force a different unit.
Gas line distance and capacity
How far the meter is from the fireplace, what has to be opened to route the pipe, and whether the existing line has capacity left after the furnace, range and water heater. Sometimes we tee off a nearby branch. Sometimes a new line runs the length of the house.
Veneer material
Brick, stacked stone, natural stone, cast stone, marble, large-format tile and plaster differ in material cost and, more importantly, in how long they take to lay. Natural stone with tight joints and mitered returns is slow, skilled work. A running-bond brick face is not.
Mantel and hearth work
A floating timber mantel on hidden steel, a carved cast stone mantel, a raised hearth built out in stone, a flush hearth cut into flooring — each is a separate build with separate structural support.
Structural changes
Moving a header, cutting a bearing wall, reframing a chase, building a footing, or resizing an existing opening. Anything that touches structure adds engineering, framing and inspection.
Permits and inspection
Gas, venting and structural work is permitted in Houston and surrounding jurisdictions. It takes scheduling time and it goes on the estimate as its own line.
Condition of the existing chimney
If you already have one, everything depends on what the camera shows. A sound flue is a non-issue. A cracked liner, a spalling firebox, a failed crown or a rusted chase cover has to be corrected before a new appliance goes in — see our chimney repair and sweep pages.
How the fuel type changes the work
Fuel type sets the floor for how much work exists before anyone talks about finishes. Read the full description of each on the installation hub:
- Wood-burning — chimney, footing, refractory firebox, liner, crown and cap — the largest scope.
- Direct vent gas — sealed unit, co-axial venting, gas line, permit, framed and finished surround.
- Electric — framing, a circuit and the finished face. No venting, no gas, no combustion clearances.
- Traditional masonry — built by hand from the footing up; the most craft-intensive work we do.
- Outdoor and pizza oven — a small structure of its own — slab, firebox, flue, chimney height above the patio cover.
What's in a written itemized quote
Every Artex estimate is written and broken into lines, so you can see what you are buying and compare us against anyone else on equal terms. A quote for an installation typically itemizes:
- Protection of floors and furniture, plus demolition and haul-off
- Framing and any structural work
- Venting components and termination
- Gas line, pressure test, or electrical circuit
- The appliance, insert or hand-laid firebox
- Veneer material, quantity and labor
- Mantel, hearth and trim
- Permits and inspection
- Final clean and test fire
If something is not on the estimate, it is not in the job. If we find something behind a wall that nobody could have seen, you get a photograph and a written change order before we carry on.
Why we don't publish a price
A price on a web page has to assume a scope. To publish one, we would have to assume the shortest venting run, the nearest gas line, the cheapest veneer and a chimney in perfect condition — and then bill the difference once the job is underway. That is how homeowners end up feeling misled by a trade they were trying to trust.
